Mandating daily, high-quality physical education for all students and upgrading gym facilities to support lifelong fitness habits.
Mamdanis Fight for Phy Ed to Combat Childhood Obesity
With childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles at crisis levels, Zhoran Mamdani declares a Fight for Phy Ed. His policy mandates a minimum of 45 minutes of daily, quality physical education for every student, K-12, taught by certified PE instructors. This goes beyond recess; it includes instruction in fitness concepts, individual and team sports, dance, and lifelong activities like yoga or martial arts. The policy is backed by a capital plan to renovate and build proper gymnasiums, pools, and outdoor fitness areas in every school.
PE curricula would be inclusive and focus on joy and competency, not just competition. The program is integrated with nutrition education in the cafeteria. Physical health is academic health, Mamdani argues. A child who moves their body learns better, feels better, and builds habits for a healthy life. We have allowed PE to be marginalized; we will restore it as a core academic subject essential for the well-being of the whole child.
